Anyone for vegemite!!

Crikey it's tough living with my Mum. Talk about a weirdo. She's got rules and regulations on how to best eat vegemite. How peculiar is that?  Before I start telling you all about the rules and reg. I'll tell you a bit about her first. Don't want you to think she's completely mad so I'll make a few excuses for her before I start. When she was a little girl her family was VERY poor. Her Daddy died when she was only 2. He was a coal miner so that makes Mum a coal miner's daughter (great name for a song, aye? ... funny, but Mum's name is Lynn and that song was written by Loretta Lynn). Her Mum was from Scottish heritage and, because she was VERY poor, she was VERY frugal. Guess a bit of that has rubbed off on Mum. At meal times there was sometimes not enough food to go around but there was ALWAYS bread on the table and a big jar of VEGEMITE. If you were still hungry once the dinner was eaten you could always fill up on bread and vegie.  Just as well Mum LOVED vegemite, aye?  Mad if you don't, I say ..... I like it too ..... it's VERY good stuff!   Ok ...  I've got the excuses out of the way so listen to this and make your own mind up as to whether or not Mum's weird.
The first most important rule to remember in our house is ... if there is a brand new jar of vegemite in the house it must NOT be opened until every skerrick of vegemite has been used from the old jar. To get the last bit out you must fill the jar with boiling water, stir and then drink the vegemite liquid. Yum!!!!!!!
Secondly .... Only Mum must open the new jar. This is not because others would be incapable of performing this task but because Mum LOVES, with a passion, that very first knife full of vegie. She reckons it tastes better than any other in the whole jar. She has been known to not use a knife but to just scoop it out with her finger and then lick it off said finger. Disgusting, aye?
Thirdly  ... Now it gets really weird ... when making a sandwich or vegemite on toast the bread must be spread with butter first. Not margarine. Only butter must be used. The butter must reach right to the edge of the crust. Once this is done the knife must then be wiped on paper towel so as not to get any butter in the vegemite jar. The vegemite can then be spread over the butter. It must also reach right to the very edge of the crusts and must completely cover the butter so that the butter is not visible at all. If once started you have to redip into the vegemite you must wipe the knife each time on paper towel. If butter is found in the vegemite jar all hell breaks loose. The same if vegemite is found in the tub of butter.
Finally ... if it's toast it must be cut into four triangle before eating. Two is not good enough. It MUST be four. If it is a sandwich it must also be cut into four triangles. All crusts MUST be eaten unless you are under five years of age when they will be cut off for you. NO exceptions!!! Everyone over 5 MUST eat their crusts.
See what did I tell you ...... My MUM IS VERY TOUGH TO LIVE WITH!!  Not to mention weird, aye??

All ready to prepare brekky. Note the paper towel for knife wiping!!

The finished product!!

See ..... NO vegemite in the butter!!

AND NO butter in the vegemite!!

One for Mum and one for me!! Why does she always get the biggest bit!!

Crikey it's in my bowl!
Pleeeeeeeeeeease Mum ..... can I have it NOW!!
Fair dinkum ...... that is so good!!!
Wanna run ... Love, Charlie.

    1. Crikey ..... Mum says "thanks for the reminder." Kraft cheese and vegemite slices. Sound good to me. Mum's going to go looking for them. She thinks they might still be out there. I sure hope so. I'd like to try those. I LOVE kraft cheese. Mum still buys it by the box and cuts off big hunks of it. The slices just aren't as good. Dad thinks it's disgusting stuff. His family wasn't poor like Mum's and they could have REAL cheese.
$14.99 for a small jar of vegemite ..... OMD that's outrageous! It's been taken over by a US company now so it shouldn't be expensive over there. Mum was worried when it was taken over. She thought they might change the recipe but so far so good. The US also took over our favourite peanut butter company and they changed the recipe and now Mum hates it. It's really sweet. I still like it. Hoo Roo!!

    1. I do Zoe, I do!!!! I never see Mum or Dad waiting until I tell them they can eat. What's with that?? Zoe .. you gotta try vegemite .... it's great but not at $14.99 a jar. When Mum and Dad went to the US (way back in 1990) they took little samples of vegemite with them and handed them out to people they met to try. They got a real kick out of watching the faces they pulled.

  4. Crikey Charley,
We gotta tell you that WE kinda KNEW about all these Rules... from PAWSONAL Experience. you see we have a Furend (BARB) who lives in Manilla, NSW ! AND she has actually been HERE to visit... YES right here in OHIO, USA... IN OUR HOUSE ON THE HILL... and she brought US (well only FRANKIE since Ernie wasn't born the last time Barb was here) some VEGEMITE to try. And she did the exact same thingys as YOUR MUM does... All the right ingredients and all the CORRECT Steps..
BUTT (SADLY) we Tried our best.. butt were just not FANS of Vegemite.
HOWEVER, we DID try it and we DO feel that it made us become CLOSER Furends with you all... Down Under.
Guess what ELSE... makes US feel Closer to YOU... WE live in Coal Mine Country... And we Know and Love that SONG. Our Dad even worked in a coal mine for a short time. They are all around us. Crikey Mate... pretty soon we will be just like BROTHERS if we keep this up. Can you say TIM TAMs??? LOVE THOSE TO BITS AND PIECES we do. Barb brought those too... and taught our mum how to do the AUSSIE SLURP... and Ernie's Roxy... has sent us MORE of them. DEEEEEEEEEELICIOUS.

  5. OMD! AND she DOES put on a thick layer. Everyone we know, just puts on a THIN...butter peeking through..layer. SHE being a transplanted yank (40 years in Oz) isn't fussed with it, so we've never tried it. However, we do get Peanut Butter Gravy on our kibble sometimes....same rule about cleaning out the jar!

    XXXOOO Bella Roxy & Dui

    1. Yeah Mum sure likes it thick. She'll eat it straight off a spoon. Even I can't come at that. You gotta start at birth to like it, I reckon. Mum (and her Mum before her) put it on their kids dummies. Imagine doing that today. You'd be up on some sort of charge!
Peanut butter gravy sounds pretty good. My mate Elvis would have liked that, aye?

  6. We don't have Vegemite in the U.S. so mom had to google it. We like reading your blog and learning different things. We also didn't know what fair dinkum was either but google is helping us learn the lingo and I think we are catching on, aye?

    Aroo to you,

    1. Mum goes mental if there's crumbs in the butter. Funny but my Dad couldn't care less. He's the one at our house that makes a mess of the butter. Matter of fact he makes a mess of everything. He's VERY messy and Mum's a tidy freak. How the heck they get on so well I don't know!!

  8. Well, I's had heard of it, but I's never had it.

  9. I must say Charlie I am one of those Aussies that prefers Marmite hahaha :) but I agree with the cross contaminations of butter and any spread!! 10. Oh yes Charlie, believe me, Gail and I know all about Scottish frugality. But did you know that in Edinburgh and Glasgow they make jokes about Aberdonians being frugal…
    Toodle pip!
    Bertie.
PS If vegemite is a bit like marmite, then I'll it it whichever way...

    1. Crikey Bertie ..... that's very funny. Those Aberdonians must be something else. Mum and I didn't know that!!
Vegemite IS like marmite. Just a different texture really but nowhere near as good.
      Hoo Roo!

  11. Hey, here's where all us USA pups can order the Land o' Oz goodies!
    https://www.simplyoz.com/

I wanna try sum of those Tim Tams that Frank an Ernie mentioned.
Not so sure bout the Vegemite though.

    1. Crikey Zoe ..... well done!! Those Tim Tams are the best things in the world. Just make sure your peeples don't scoff the lot before you get to have a try. You probably wouldn't like vegemite. You have to start very early in life to enjoy it. But here's another good thing. Cherry ripes. They're definately worth a try.

    1. Crikey .... good one Dad. That IS pretty funny for an IT bloke. No flavour would ever run out on us. Mum would NEVER cut our sangers in half. All we ever get is triangles. Squares? Squares? What are they??????? She does do soldiers for the Grandkids but only when they have a boiled egg. Apparently you have to have soldiers with a boiled egg. AND the crust is ALWAYS cut off soldiers. She's very weird, my Mum.
Yeah what is it with that wait thing? Very annoying, aye??

  13. Daddy loves vegemite! He had it last year when he was working in Sydney, Australia. He liked it so much he sent mom to look for some here. She couldn't find any, but you can order it online. Thank you for the lesson on how to eat it. Mom will keep this mind when she finally gets to taste vegemite!

    1. You Daddy has very good taste, Buddy. It's VERY unusual for someone to like vegemite without having got used to it when they were little. You've got to give it a try though. It is really very good once you get used to it. I should load Zaidie's lear jet up with samples of the stuff and he could drop them off for you.

  14. I gotta do that wait stuff too, and sometimes a whole lineup of this and that silly stuff...crikey growlmy its my breakfast! Sheesh.

Growlmy has heard of your treat but nevfur tried it...Hmmm, next time in Canada she will visit the British store....bound to be some in there!

Sorry I wasn't around; our interwebs was kaput...sigh...

    1. It's a real pain that wait stuff, aye?? Funny things humans with all their rules and regulations. I doubt if the British store would have vegemite. They have something similar called marmite, I think, but it's nowhere near as good as vegemite.
Glad your back on air. I'm not going to be around much for the next week or two. Nan's come to stay and she's a full time job according to Mum.

  15. Mommy and I have never had Vegemite. Mommy thinks she has heard of it but doesn't know if it is available here. We will google it. Mommy and I would try it.
