Get a load of this bloke!!!

Crikey ..... get a load of this bloke.  He's turning into Murphy.  He's eating a chicken wing. If I were there I'd be eating more than a chicken wing.

Crikey Herbie ..... it's a chook, mate ....... get it!!!
Someone told our Jen that guinea fowl are good things to have on your property.  They kill small snakes and they eat ticks.  We have these horrible ticks where we live and snakes.  Ticks kill us dog blokes. AND cats.  Snakes too I guess but I reckon I'd kill a snake before it killed me.  Get a tick on you though and your dead in three days. They paralyse you. Not a nice way to go I hear.  Most dogs have to take medication to prevent ticks.  Herbie's on medication.  I'm not. I'm a bit iffy with medication.  I've got real short hair and Mum reckons she'd find a tick on me before it did any damage. I s'pose she's right. She does go over me with a fine tooth comb every night but I sure don't want to get one of those tick blokes on me.  I've had one so far but Mum spotted it before it even latched on.  Anyway I'm digressing.  Those guinea fowl blokes???  Our Jen got 3 when they were tiny, wee, babies. She was told to put 'em in with the chooks for a few weeks and then to let 'em go and they would head for the nearest tree and hang around the property for the rest of their days where they would take care of all the vermin. Great idea thought Jen!  Well those guinea fowl had other ideas.  When Jen let them go they just stayed with the chooks.  Talk about good Mothers.  Those chooks looked after them so well  they decided they weren't going to leave home ..... EVER!!  All they eat is chook food and they are BIG now.  No ticks or snakes for them.  Jen reckons they are keeping her broke. I've offered to help out but no-one listens to me.  I wonder what guinea fowl tastes like.  Has anyone tried one??

Crikey Herbie ..... I know Murphs is watching over you but ..... REALLY .....  it's not normal, mate!!
Wanna run ...... Love, Charlie.

  3. Oh my word Charlie we had know idea the ticks down under were so deadly. The ones we have here can give Rocky Mountain Spotted fever to humans which can be cured but it takes time. Thank goodness for your short hair. Be careful my handsome matey you have a good Mum to look after you so carefully.

Mom met a guinea fowl family once...and OMCs she said they are loud and fast. As for taste....you better pluck them before you try them those fevvers might cause you to hack up a hair ball.

  4. Charlie then brittany is THE place for you... we have no ticks, never. well eggs-cept one imported by the whft of my grandpawrents :o) Our neighbor had 40 of that guinea guys once... he used our meadow for that berds... and after a week WE were sued for the horrible noises...how unfair...

  5. Oh Charlie, you are fortunate in having a vigilant Mum. Gail only spots ticks after they've been feeding on me for a day or two and have fattened up nicely...She does treat me with that Frontline stuff, but some of the ticks round here are apparently resistant to it. But our ticks in Scotland are relatively benign compared to your it seems. Same with the spiders and snakes. Take care mate!

PS I have never tasted guinea fowl, but am happy to sample one any time...

Those in the know suggest a similarity to pheasant... is that like we hyoomans saying snake tastes like chook??? Oh those paralysis ticks are fiendish; even with protective stuffs I had to keep checking Jade and removed several over the years. Bertie tells you ours here are relatively benign... they do carry Lyme Disease... so at least they don't potentially kill ya. Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  12. It looks like mother goose and her chicks in that last photo! Very funny.

Miss Oswin gets tick medicine in her neck. She has such long hair, it is quite hard to just see one. So far though: no ticks.

  13. I've had a tick on me a couple times. Fortunately we don't have the deadly kind around here. I'd have caught those big birdies by now and taken their squeakers out!

  16. Charlie, I think Guinea fowl is a delicacy...for humans, not for you Charlie. My mother's dog once had a tick, although they are not much found in our area. Her dog had been travelling. She survived but was very sick.

  17. We think you need to help Jen out. Don't want her poor. We're lucky around here, not many ticks and the ones that are here, generally stay on the sheep! But SNAKES...yuck. We hope the kookaburras are on the job there.

  24. People across the way...a far distance across the way from where I live...have some guinea fowl. They've wandered through this property a couple of times, picking as they move along like a few centurions.

I hate ticks. I found one wending his way up my arm a couple of months ago, but, fortunately, that's the first one I've seen in ages. As my two furry rascals are indoor cats they're safe from the pests.

  25. Oh Charlie that's awful - you don't want them to get you ! We have ticks too, I don't think they are quite as vicious as yours, but they can cause nasty problems. I wear a special collar all the time to stop ticks and fleas biting me, and so far, all four paws crossed, I have been OK.

  26. Ticks like you have are like a major plague. And there are some naughty horrid spiders there too, right? Pawppy and petcretary were discussing where they might find the living good, and petcretary mentioned that had her pawrents gone to Australia (that was a possibility along with the West Indies, USA and South Afica, Wow!), instead of Canada, we might not have evfur met...and then...well then I wouldn't be here either...OMD:(

The pests we deal with here are small potatoes by comparison...though they do cause diseases, at least there are treatments.

Our former neighbors had 2 guinea fowl...and they were deafening. You could hear them for miles and miles, Wow.
Maybe you can find some ticks to feed them and maybe if they acquire a taste for them they might start defending the farm of them....its a thought?

Herbie is a sweetie! I even now would try to have me a fresh meal:)
